We use the traditional structure of Ninpo Taijutsu to teach children how to navigate the world with confidence and composure. By focusing on “Traditional Roots,” we instill a deep sense of respect and focus. By emphasizing “Modern Readiness,” we provide students with the physical coordination and situational awareness needed to recognize and avoid conflict. Our step-by-step curriculum ensures that every child masters the fundamentals of movement, balance, and self-protection in a way that is age-appropriate yet immediately practical. **Our Approach: Safe, Effective, and Engaging** We believe in a hands-on, partner-based training approach that facilitates learning actual body mechanics and how techniques truly work. - **Direct Partner Training:** Kids work directly with fellow students to learn punching, kicking, and blocking attacks in a supervised and controlled manner. - **Real-World Recovery:** Students will learn how to roll and fall, skills that enable them to recover gracefully from throws and take-downs. - **Mastering Control:** They will learn to set up and execute throws and take-downs, gaining skill to retain their own balance (or center) while taking the attacker’s balance. - **Practical Application:** Kids will learn basic joint locks and begin learning some pressure points, alongside essential Japanese etiquette and terminology. ***Ready to [Book a Free Trial Class](https://shingandojo.com/book-a-class/)? At Shin Gan Dojo, our name is more than just a title; it’s a reflection of our core philosophy, our spiritual foundation, and the ultimate goal we strive for in our training and in life. Sensei Brian took great care and thought when choosing this name upon opening the school in 2004. ## **Dojo: A Place of Dedicated Training** The word **Dojo (道場)** simply means “a school for training in Japanese arts of self-defense.” It is a dedicated space where individuals commit to rigorous practice, discipline, and the pursuit of mastery. ## **Shin Gan: God’s Eyes** The heart of our name comes from the Japanese phrase: **Shin shin, Shin gan (神心神目)**. - **Shin shin (神心):** God’s Heart - **Shin gan (神目):** God’s Eyes The meaning of this phrase translates to the ability to **“see what is not shown and hear what is not spoken.”** It speaks to a deep intuition – an inner discernment that allows one to perceive truth and sense danger even before it fully manifests, that soft quite voice of Providence. For us, [Sensei Brian and Gigi Simmons](https://shingandojo.com/about-us/instructors/), **Shin Gan** is chosen to honor the Creator’s ever-present guidance in our lives. We believe that recognizing and connecting with God provides the strength and power to overcome any challenge, whether in the great battles for survival or the daily struggles of life. --- Please note that while our dojo name, **Shin Gan**, holds a profound personal meaning for us, we want to be clear that we do not teach or promote any specific religion or spirituality. ***Our school is a place for martial arts training***, and we welcome all students, regardless of their personal beliefs or background. --- ![author avatar](https://shingandojo.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Gigi-2024.jpg) Gigi Simmons Managing Director / Instructor Gigi Simmons is an Instructor and Director of Operations at Shin Gan Dojo in Texas. Every element was carefully chosen to reflect the values we strive to embody on and off the mat. --- ### **The Heart of the Emblem: Shin (真)** At the very center of our emblem is the Japanese kanji **真 (shin)**, which means “truth, reality, and genuine.” This is the cornerstone of our philosophy. This kanji reminds us to be **truthful and authentic** in all that we do. Our martial arts journey is about becoming a genuine version of ourselves, without pretense or deception. ### **The Balance of Fire and Water** Surrounding the kanji, you’ll find a triangle enclosed within a circle. This is an ancient symbol for **fire (triangle)** and **water (circle)**, representing the balance of opposing forces. The three equal sides of the triangle symbolize the trinity of **Mind, Body, and Spirit**—each one crucial to a complete and balanced martial artist. The circle reminds us that our true power comes from **stability** and inner calm. ### **The Purity of the Lotus Flower** The next layer of our emblem is the **lotus flower**, a symbol of purity. Though it grows from mud and mire, its petals remain untouched and beautiful. The lotus teaches us that, like the flower, we must strive to keep our hearts and minds as pure as humanly possible, remaining independent of evil thoughts and influences, no matter our circumstances. ### **The Swords of the Dharma Wheel** Inside the lotus petals are the **swords of the Dharma Wheel**. The Dharma Wheel, a significant symbol in Japanese culture, represents universal law and order. The eight swords in our emblem symbolize our commitment to protecting this balance and order. The eight directions of the swords also reference **Happo no Sabaki**, the eight-directional movement that is a key principle in mastering our ancient art. ### **The Banner of Ninpo Bugei** Finally, the **gold band** that encircles the entire emblem signifies our connection to the **Ninpo Bugei arts**. This banner tells us that we are part of a rich and deep martial arts legacy, carrying on traditions of discipline and mastery that have been passed down for centuries. Each part of our emblem is a reminder of the values we strive for—truthfulness, balance, purity, and a disciplined commitment to justice. ![author avatar](https://shingandojo.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Gigi-2024.jpg) Gigi Simmons Managing Director / Instructor Gigi Simmons is an Instructor and Director of Operations at Shin Gan Dojo in Texas. The system was established by **Yakushimaru Ryushin** (later Kuki Ryushin), who received the surname “Kuki” from Emperor Go-Daigo after aiding his escape during the Nanboku-chō period, with techniques evolving from naval boarding tactics and armored combat. The curriculum is part of the broader **Kukishinden Happō Biken-jutsu** tradition, which integrates unarmed taijutsu, [staff (bō)](https://shingandojo.com/classes/kukishin-ryu-bojutsu-stick-arts/), spear (yari), and halberd (naginata) techniques. Key historical developments include the adaptation of weighted staffs for armored warfare by the 11th sōke, **Okuni Kōgenta Yukihisa**, during the Genna period. The lineage was preserved through the Kuki family and later transmitted in the 20th century by **Takamatsu Toshitsugu** to **Masaaki Hatsumi** (Bujinkan) and **Shoto Tanemura** (Genbukan), who maintain distinct modern branches of the art. [Sensei Brian and Senpai Gigi](https://shingandojo.com/about-us/instructors/) will be traveling to Japan for an intensive professional development training. **Please note: Classes will be CLOSED from September 1st to 12th.** **Our regular class schedule will RESUME on September 15th.** ***NEW STUDENTS: Don’t let this stop you from getting started now! We are giving 50% off 1st month tuition for all new students who sign up in August 2025.*** We are incredibly excited about this opportunity to deepen our knowledge and bring back enhanced skills to our dojo. We wanted to share some background on the unique training we’ll be undertaking. **Advanced Study: Kobudo Asayama Ichiden Ryu** We are honored to be studying with **Seki Sensei**, the **22nd headmaster of Kobudo Asayama Ichiden Ryu**. This is a rare opportunity to train directly with a lineage holder of an ancient and comprehensive martial art. ***What is Kobudo Asayama Ichiden Ryu?*** Founded approximately 400 years ago during Japan’s late Sengoku period (a time of intense civil war), Asayama Ichiden Ryu preserves authentic battlefield techniques. Unlike modern sport martial arts, its methods are rooted in practical application, even assuming the practitioner is wearing armor. It’s a truly comprehensive system, encompassing: - **Kenjutsu:** Sword techniques. - **Iai:** The art of drawing the katana. - **Ju Tai Jutsu:** Unarmed combat techniques (Sensei Brian is already proficient in this complete Black Belt curriculum and Senpai Gigi holds Shodan, currently working on Nidan Black Belt material). - And many other traditional weapons. During this intensive training camp, we will specifically focus on **Kenjutsu, Iai** (drawing the sword). These aspects of Asayama Ichiden Ryu will be new to us. ***The Significance of Kobudo*** Asayama Ichiden Ryu is considered one of the few true Kobudo (ancient budo martial arts) that still exist today. This is because it was established before the Edo period (1603-1868), a time when samurai were still active. Martial arts styles that emerged after the Edo period, or following Japan’s Westernization, are classified as Gendai-budo (modern budo martial arts). Studying Kobudo offers a direct connection to the historical and practical roots of Japanese combat. **Continuing a Legacy of Excellence** This training was specifically suggested by Sensei Brian’s own teacher, **Sensei Chadwick Minge**, as a crucial progression in our martial and professional development. Under Sensei Minge’s continuous guidance, Sensei Brian has already achieved the prestigious rank of **4th Level Instructor’s License in Ninpo Tai Jutsu**. This comprehensive rank includes high black belt levels in all of the following Japanese Ryu Ha (disciplines): - Asayama Ichiden Ryu Ju Tai Jutsu - Takagi Yoshin Ryu Ju Tai Jutsu - Shinden Fudo Ryu Ju Tai Jutsu - Kukishin Ryu Daken Tai Jutsu - Koto Ryu Koppo Jutsu - Gyokko Ryu Kosshi Jutsu - Kukishin Ryu Bo Jutsu (bo staff) - Kukishin Ryu Ken Jutsu (sword) We are committed to continuously advancing our skills and knowledge to provide you with the highest quality instruction. We look forward to returning with enhanced knowledge and a deeper understanding of the art, which will undoubtedly enrich your training experience. Thank you for your understanding and continued dedication. Sincerely, Sensei Brian & Senpai Gigi --- **Reminder Scheduled Closures:** Holidays, staff training, and other scheduled closure days are factored into your monthly tuition cost. We do not offer discounts or alter monthly tuition during these periods. We returned last week feeling energized and privileged by the opportunity to train directly under **Seki Sensei, the 22nd Headmaster of Kobudo Asayama Ichiden Ryu**. This journey was a dedicated introduction to new, related disciplines for us in Asayama Ichiden Ryu: **Iai (the art of drawing the katana)** and **Kenjutsu (sword techniques)**. This intensive study of a true **Kobudo**—an ancient martial art predating the Edo period—was a crucial step in our ongoing personal martial journey. ## **Commitment to the Highest Standards** Our commitment to continuous education is the cornerstone of Shin Gan Dojo. We undertake these training opportunities not to immediately introduce new techniques, but to **deepen our own knowledge and enhance our overall understanding** of the art’s foundational philosophy and historical context.\* This ensures that the instruction you receive in *Ninpo Taijutsu* is always rooted in the highest standard of authenticity. We maintain this rigorous approach because we believe true quality is achieved only through the continuous growth of the instructors. ## **Sharing the Experience** We are incredibly grateful for your patience and understanding while we were away. We will be sharing more photos from the trip over the coming weeks, but for now, please enjoy our group photo with the remarkable teachers and students who made this experience a success. Thank you once again for your dedication and continued support of our dojo. Sincerely, Sensei Brian & Senpai Gigi --- \***NOTE: We are not teaching, nor passing along any part of the Asayama Ichiden Ryu Iai or kenjutsu training.** We undertake these training opportunities to deepen our own knowledge and enhance our overall understanding of the art. --- ![author avatar](https://shingandojo.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Sensei-Brian-Feb-2025.jpg) Sensei Brian Simmons Head Instructor Sensei Brian Simmons, Head Instructor of Shin Gan Dojo, has dedicated over three decades to mastering and teaching Ninpo Taijutsu. Black Belt is only the gateway, the first goal. Mastery of the art is the ultimate goal. To achieve mastery in any endeavor we must first master these six principles of action. ## These are the Principles of Achieving Success ### **Willingness** ***The readiness to act or do something gladly.*** *Willingness is the principle that creates ideas and dreams. Nothing can happen until one is willing to make something happen.* ### **Courage** **The quality that enables one to face fear or danger with confidence.** *Courage takes us from the thought stage to the actual journey. It motivates us to change ideas from dreams into reality. Courage moves us through our fears and causes us to take action toward our goals.* ### **Commitment** **A pledge or obligation to follow a course of action.** *Commitment is the principle that drives us to start our goals. When we commit to do something and do it without fail, be begin to create our character; match our words with our actions, and make things happen.* ### **Discipline** **The act of doing something to perfection.** *Discipline is continually repeating positive action in order to continually get positive results. It turns a skilled man into a master craftsman.* ### **Patience** **The ability to calmly endure hardships or annoyances.** *Patience allows us to wait calmly for the perfect window of opportunity. With patience, great results will appear through the passage of time.* ### **Perseverance** **Keeping a course of action no matter what.** *Perseverance is the principle that drives us to complete our goals, never giving up until we do achieve them, regardless of the difficulty we encounter.* These principles are guaranteed to help you obtain any kind of success, skill, or even overcome hardships in life. These are the Principles to Achieving Success. ***As written by Sensei Brian Simmons*** ![author avatar](https://shingandojo.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Sensei-Brian-Feb-2025.jpg) Sensei Brian Simmons Head Instructor Sensei Brian Simmons, Head Instructor of Shin Gan Dojo, has dedicated over three decades to mastering and teaching Ninpo Taijutsu. While specialized sports training is valuable, the most successful athletes often possess a foundation of universal skills that apply regardless of the game being played. At Shin Gan Dojo, we’ve observed that students who supplement their seasonal sports with traditional Japanese Jujutsu and Ninpo Taijutsu often find a competitive edge that goes beyond just physical fitness. Here is how the “Traditional Roots” of martial arts provide the “Modern Readiness” needed for today’s young athletes. ### 1. Taihenjutsu: The Art of Injury Prevention In sports like football, soccer, and wrestling, the ability to fall safely is just as important as the ability to run fast. In our curriculum, we emphasize **Taihenjutsu**, the art of rolling, falling, and recovering gracefully from trips or throws. When a soccer player is tripped or a football player is tackled, the instinctual ability to “break fall” or roll out of the impact significantly reduces the risk of injury. By training the body to move fluidly with the ground, athletes learn to stay in the game rather than being sidelined by a hard landing. ### 2. Mastering the “Center”: Balance and Body Mechanics Traditional **Jujutsu** focuses on understanding body mechanics, specifically how to take an opponent’s center while maintaining your own. For a basketball player posting up in the paint or a wrestler fighting for a takedown, this understanding of balance and leverage is transformative. In our classes, students learn to execute throws and takedowns by identifying weak points in a skeletal structure (**Koppo Jutsu**) and manipulating center of gravity. These skills translate directly to the field or court, giving athletes superior body control and the ability to maintain their footing under pressure. ### 3. Precision and Coordination: Daken Tai Jutsu The striking techniques within **Daken Tai Jutsu** (an original form of Karate) require immense focus and limb-to-eye coordination. Whether it is the timing of a block or the precision of a strike, these drills sharpen the nervous system. For an athlete, this translates to better hand-eye coordination, faster reaction times, and improved spatial awareness, essential traits for any high performance sport. ### 4. The Mental Game: Focus and Determination Physical skill is only half the battle; the “character crossover” is where martial arts truly shines. Competitive sports can be high stress environments. The discipline cultivated in the dojo, fostered through Japanese etiquette and the mastery of complex joint locks and chokes, builds a unique brand of mental resilience. Unlike seasonal sports that have an “off-season,” martial arts is a year-round commitment. This consistent training environment helps students maintain a high level of discipline and focus during the months when their primary sport isn’t in session. They return to their teams not just physically stronger, but with a sharpened “martial” mindset: calm, determined, and ready to lead. ### 5. Social Maturity and Peer Camaraderie Our dedicated teen classes provide an environment where young adults can train with peers of similar size and maturity. This builds a sense of camaraderie that mirrors the teamwork found in sports like football or basketball, but with a focus on individual accountability. Athletes learn to ask relevant questions about self defense and body mechanics, deepening their overall “sports IQ.” ### A Foundation for Excellence Martial arts training isn’t meant to replace soccer, football, wrestling, or any other; it is meant to anchor them. By developing vital life skills, focus, fitness, coordination, and confidence, students at Shin Gan Dojo become more versatile, durable, and disciplined athletes. Whether your child is looking to improve their balance for the upcoming season or build the grit needed to excel in all areas of life, the skills learned on the mat are skills they will carry for a lifetime. --- *Interested in seeing how Jujutsu and Ninpo Taijutsu can complement your child’s athletic journey? We do it for the “real world.” Here are two stories from our students where their training made all the difference. ### **The Ice Rink Save: Nate’s Story** Nate, a father of three and a long-time martial arts student, was enjoying a day at the ice rink with his family. While skating near the edge and holding his toddler, a fast-moving skater accidentally swiped Nate’s legs out from under him. Because of his training, Nate didn’t panic. His muscle memory took over. He executed a controlled fall that kept his child from ever touching the ice and prevented his own head from whipping back against the hard surface. His years of practice saved them both from a potential trip to the ER. ### **The Driveway Slip: Joseph’s Story** Joseph started training in his late 50s to stay fit for retirement. Every class, he practiced his rolls and falls. One winter morning, Joseph slipped on a patch of black ice in his driveway. Instead of reaching out with a locked arm (a common cause of broken wrists), Joseph used the break-falling skills he had practiced at the Dojo. He walked away without a single broken bone or a bump on his head. At nearly 60, his “self-defense” training had defended him against gravity. --- ## **What is Taihenjutsu?** In the traditional Japanese martial arts we teach, **Taihenjutsu** is a core discipline. > **Taihenjutsu (体変術):** Literally translated as “the art of body changing/moving,” it refers to the skill of saving oneself from falls, trips, or throws through rolling and break-falling. By maximizing body mechanics, Taihenjutsu allows you to: - **Redirect Impact:** Move the force of the fall away from your spine and joints. - **Protect the Head:** Train your neck muscles and “tuck” reflexes to prevent concussions. - **Maintain Mobility:** Transition from a fall back to your feet or into a defensive ground position. ***Whether you are an athlete, a parent, or someone looking to stay mobile as you age, learning how to fall is perhaps the most practical “self-defense” skill you will ever acquire.*** --- ## **Ready to Protect Your Body?** Don’t wait for a patch of ice to find out if you know how to fall. Join our adult martial arts classes and start building the muscle memory that could save your life. **[Click HERE to learn more about Adult Martial Arts at Shin Gan Dojo!](https://shingandojo.com/classes/adults-martial-arts/)** Younger students also learn Taihenjutsu. I’ve pondered this question many times: Who sticks with it and why? **Content:** ### **The Three-Spoke Wheel of Success** In order for any type of schooling to be successful you need three spokes in the wheel of success. That is to say, we need three people who have complete commitment to the success of the student. They are: the teachers, the parents and the students. If any one person in the triad fails to do their part, problems will only be overcome if the other two people have a strong will to succeed. When two of the three people fail, success is nearly impossible. If all three have no drive to help the student succeed, there is no chance for success. On the other hand, if all three people are committed to the student’s success, then all academic problems can be overcome. #### **Which Students Succeed** Over the years I’ve watched many of our martial arts students come and go. I’ve pondered this question many times: Who sticks with it and why? Having watched the ones who have accomplished a significant amount of success, I’ve finally concluded that these successful ones have all three spokes of the wheel of success. Mainly, three people committed to their success: The interested student, the committed parent and the involved teacher. Lets look at these parts briefly and see what all this has to do with martial arts, the Shin Gan Dojo and [Urban Defense Academy](https://www.facebook.com/UrbanDefenseAcademyTexas) and your kids. #### **The Teacher** Here at the Shin Gan Dojo and Urban Defense Academy we promote a culture of success. Sensei and our Instructors have a genuine concern for our students and for passing on a genuine martial art. We provide a professional atmosphere where you and your kids can be free of distractions. We also provide a fun, safe and exciting place to train in. Our routine is a regimen that our students can rely on. They know exactly what to expect each time they come. To ensure high quality long-term students, we do not allow lackadaisical, uninterested, unengaged or absentee students to stay that way. This helps us to provide an atmosphere conducive to proper training where we can provide the instruction necessary for our students to become black belts. By changing poor quality students into productive students we can keep them from slowing down the progress of the whole class. In this way we promote the culture of success. #### **The Parents** In order for our students to grow and for us to maintain high quality martial artists, parents must also be involved in the culture of success. Their part is getting the student to the scheduled classes on time with regularity. Help the student study the technique names and memorize the movements. Participate in dojo functions when possible. Help the student stay committed and focused during the tough and tedious portions of their training regimen. Remind them of their progress and the positive changes that you’ve witnessed and reinforce the Principles of Achieving Success. #### **The Student** The student is responsible for attending the provided classes with full attention and respect; To arrive prepared with training manual and full uniform; To take classes seriously when training; Commit to understanding the martial art techniques, strategies and philosophy; Learn and take to heart the Principles of Achieving Success. With each person doing their part, the system will be effective and the student will prosper. ***[Sensei Brian Simmons ](https://shingandojo.com/about-us/instructors/)*** ![author avatar](https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/9586b655ea86f69ffa12c0f057c9ff2261d1127ceff94af419d7794c2dcb1954?s=300&d=mm&r=g) Instructor [See Full Bio](https://shingandojo.com/author/uda/) **Categories:** Articles --- ### [Beginnings: How Sensei Found the Martial Arts](https://shingandojo.com/how-sensei-found-the-martial-arts/) **Published:** November 8, 2021 **Author:** Instructor **Content:** For those interested in a little more background on Sensei [Brian Simmons](https://shingandojo.com/about-us/) beginnings in martial arts, here is some deeper history. Sensei Brian Simmons’ interest in martial arts began around 1990. Lost in a world of confusion, he came to believe that the discipline of a martial art might help him find the direction and clarity his life so sorely needed. Through books and conversations with various martial arts practitioners, his research led him to conclude that the ultimate martial art was the Japanese art Ninjutsu. As he sought the opportunity to train in Ninjutsu, he was luckily guided by a friend to a genuine Ninpo dojo in North Hollywood, California that was, at that time, associated with the Genbukan, one of the only two organizations in Japan teaching authentic Ninjutsu, or Ninpo Tai Jutsu; this school was the Yamato Dojo headed by [Sensei Chadwick Minge](http://thedojocovington.com/kancho-minge/). Brian made an appointment to observe a class and, after seeing the rolls and falls, knew he was in the right place. Unfortunately, he was financially unstable at the time and remained hesitant to join. Finally, a voice spoke to him and comforted him – a voice so loud it crowded out all other thoughts and fears, a voice he knew not to be his own. He knew then that he was to train in what has since become a sacred place for him. He joined Yamato Dojo in 1991 and gave himself over to the guidance of Sensei Chadwick Minge. His personal circumstances at the time he joined Yamato Dojo prevented him from keeping a full-time job. Much of his early attendance was on Sensei Minge’s good graces. As a result, during his first six years at Yamato Dojo all of his time was dedicated to training. Having no other previous martial arts training, he had nothing to unlearn. He attended every class the dojo offered and often found himself training with Sensei Minge alone. Being tossed around for an hour by Sensei Minge rewarded him with the rare opportunity to truly learn the rolls and falls of Taihen Jutsu – often out of sheer necessity! Through his continuous attendance and devotion, he gained Sensei Minge’s confidence as an upcoming martial artist and was soon trusted as his *Uke* (Assistant). As Sensei Minge’s Uke, his devotion continued to grow as he learned to commit to an attack, i.e., to attack for the sake of attacking, and without the fear of hurting his opponent or retaliation. Once assured this lesson was learned, Sensei Minge entrusted to him the duty of cutting him with the *Katana*. Using the Katana requires maintaining strong spirit while learning the delicate balance between cutting for the sake of the cut. In 1994, he was awarded the rank of *Sho Dan* by Sensei Chadwick Minge. After being awarded Sho Dan by Sensei Minge, Brian joined the Genbukan organization (not a current member of Genbukan). Brian had met Tanemura Sensei previously on his frequent visits to Yamato Dojo, and was used as his Uke during the Hanbo portion of a Ninpo seminar—a position for which only trusted students are used. Tanemura Sensei honored Brian by awarding him the rank of Sho Dan personally, and further honored him by commenting on his quiet nature and strong spirit, calling him an American Samurai. As his abilities in Ninpo grew, his responsibilities at the dojo grew. Some time after being awarded the rank of *Ichi Kyu*, he was allowed to teach private lessons. Although he had already been assisting Sensei Minge with children’s classes, he was now able to teach both adults and children, both as an assistant to Sensei Minge as well as conduct classes—privately and publicly—on his own. Sensei Simmons soon learned that there is no better way to learn than to teach. From 1995 to 1999, while continuing to train and teach at Yamato Dojo, Sensei Simmons incorporated his gifts for teaching and Ninpo into his Ninja Karate Party business. Providing entertainment and education at children’s birthday parties, he was able to introduce Ninpo to a wider demographic. Thanks to the improvisational nature of the Ninja Karate Parties, his understanding of free flow movement and *Ran Dori* was greatly enhanced as well. Brian continued to train and teach in the capacity of *Dai Sempai* (Head Assistant) at Yamato Dojo until 2004. Following in the footsteps of his teacher, in 2004 Sensei Brian Simmons opened his own martial arts school. He moved to Northern Nevada and opened the Shin Gan Dojo, which operated successfully for 15 years in Sparks, Nevada, USA. Teaching both privately and publicly has gone far in compounding Sensei Brian Simmons’ own understanding of Ninpo, as well as given him the opportunity to work with students from all walks of life, including the very young, the very inexperienced, the mentally challenged, the physically handicapped, the elderly, and the overweight as well as those students who have a natural aptitude for the art. Under the care and guidance of Sensei Minge since 1991 to the present he has learned the power of Ninpo, as well as discovered his own natural gift for teaching and natural talent at this martial art. During this time he has achieved the rank of 4th Level Instructor’s License (out of 5 levels). Because of the all-inclusive nature of Ninpo Tai Jutsu, the 4th Level Instructor’s License is comparative to and inclusive of these ranks in the following arts: - Asayama Ichiden Ryu Ju Tai Jutsu – 4th Degree Black Belt - Takagi Yoshin Ryu Ju Tai Jutsu – 6th Degree Black Belt - Shinden Fudo Ryu Ju Tai Jutsu – 2nd Degree Black Belt - Kukishin Ryu Daken Tai Jutsu – 4th Degree Black Belt - Koto Ryu Koppo Jutsu – 3rd Degree Black Belt - Gyokko Ryu Kosshi Jutsu – 4th Degree Black Belt - Kukishin Ryu Bo Jutsu – 2nd Degree Black Belt - Kukishin Ryu Ken Jutsu – 2nd Degree Black Belt As martial arts is a life-long pursuit, he continues his study beyond these rankings. In 2019, Sensei Simmons moved to Boquete, Chiriqui, in the Republica de Panama with his wife Gigi and built a new dojo where he continued to teach and share the gifts bestowed upon him with others. 2020 brought unexpected changes. Sensei Brian and Gigi decided to return to the United States, choosing Liberty Hill, Texas as their new home. They have opened a new training facility in February 2021, re-named Urban Defense Academy to encompass both the Traditional Japanese Martial Arts and Firearms Training. Through the will of the Divine Spirit, Sensei Brian and Gigi will continue to share their passion and knowledge of these martial arts in their new community. ![Chadwick Minge, Shoto Tanamura, Sato Kinbei](https://shingandojo.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Chadwick-Sato-Kinbei-Tanamura-768x1024.jpeg "Chadwick-Sato-Kinbei-Tanamura - Martial Arts Dojo in Liberty Hill, Texas")Sato Kinbei seated left Shoto Tanemura seated right Chadwick Minge standing center![Chadwick Minge, Alan Freidman, Brian Simmons](https://shingandojo.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/IMG_1585-1024x840.jpg "Brian Simmons and Teacher - Martial Arts Dojo in Liberty Hill, Texas")Chadwick Minge center Alan Friedman left Brian Simmons right ![author avatar](https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/9586b655ea86f69ffa12c0f057c9ff2261d1127ceff94af419d7794c2dcb1954?s=300&d=mm&r=g) Instructor [See Full Bio](https://shingandojo.com/author/uda/) **Categories:** Articles --- ### [Congratulations on passing your Black Belt test!](https://shingandojo.com/black-belt-1/) **Published:** February 17, 2024 **Author:** Instructor **Content:** Congratulations to [Gigi Simmons](https://shingandojo.com/about-us/instructors/) for passing her Black Belt test for Sho Dan in Asayama Ichiden Ryu! This class offers valuable tools to effectively protect your self in various situations. It’s important to recognize that women have distinct physical characteristics from men. Men are generally larger and stronger, so it’s crucial not to try to fight like them. Don’t be misled by movies depicting female heroes effortlessly defeating men in combat. ***Instead, embrace your feminine strength and fight naturally and fiercely!*** This workshop gives an introduction to some valuable skills, but is not a substitute for the understanding gained from ongoing lessons. The training exercises focus on utilizing the most effective anatomical weapons available to women, taking advantage of the strength in our hips and legs. We’ll start by practicing these techniques individually, gradually progressing to apply them on padded shields to target specific areas of the attacker’s body. In the final stage, we’ll test our skills by stringing the moves together against training partners and simulated attackers. Throughout the workshop, you’ll learn crucial techniques such as punching, kicking, blocking, and escaping wrist grabs. Additionally, we’ll provide guidance on how to handle situations if the fight goes to the ground. To find out when our next Self Defense for Young Ladies Workshop is scheduled, please refer to our [Class Schedule](https://shingandojo.com/book-a-class/) or [Contact Us](https://shingandojo.com/contact-us-2/) directly. This class offers valuable tools to effectively protect your self in various situations. The ladies learned practical skills to: \* escape and survive a physical attack \* develop survival mindset We can customize this unarmed Self Defense class to meet the needs and concerns of the ladies in attendance. One example of class content: The ladies practiced a series of escapes from wrist grabs and arm grabs and how to escape and deal with being dragged away. They learned to escape several types of chokes – we worked on solutions for various chokes from a standing position and being choked on the ground. We had discussion about survival mindset. The techniques focused on maximizing effect by using body mechanics instead of reliance on strength to escape. ***Embrace your feminine strength and fight naturally and fiercely!*** This workshop gives an introduction to some valuable skills, but is not a substitute for the understanding gained from ongoing lessons. It’s important to recognize that women have distinct physical characteristics from men. Men are generally larger and stronger, so it’s crucial not to try to fight like them. Don’t be misled by movies depicting female heroes effortlessly defeating men in combat. To that end we would like to share some Japanese culture with you as it directly pertains to the martial arts disciplines we teach. As many know, [Sensei Brian and Senpai Gigi](https://shingandojo.com/about-us/instructors/) recently traveled to Japan for [professional development training](https://shingandojo.com/short-dojo-closure-for-advanced-training-in-japan-exciting-details/). During the trip we acquired some artwork to compliment the dojo. We wanted to share a little bit about one of the new scrolls. This scroll depicts Fudo Myo O – a buddhist diety that is closely associated with martial arts in Japan – Shinden Fudo Ryu for example. It has a close association with [Asayama Ichiden Ryu](https://shingandojo.com/short-dojo-closure-for-advanced-training-in-japan-exciting-details/), as it is said he had a vision of Fudo Myo O that gave him the philosophical and technical insights on which the school is based – most [Koryu](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ko-ry%C5%AB) have similar lore. In his right hand he carries a straight blade for cutting through ignorance and in his left he carries a rope to bind evil. The flame represent purity, the impure having been burnt away (akin to forging something like a sword, removing impure elements from the raw steel), and his face usually has one fang up, one down to show a balance of compassion and ferocity. Basically, the image represents change and refinement, hence the tight association with martial arts and ascetics in historical Japan. --- The artwork in our dojo is a key part of our commitment to sharing the Japanese culture that is central to the martial arts we teach. We want to be clear that we do not teach or promote any specific religion or spirituality. ***Our school is a place for martial arts training***, and we welcome all students, regardless of their personal beliefs or background. --- ![author avatar](https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/9586b655ea86f69ffa12c0f057c9ff2261d1127ceff94af419d7794c2dcb1954?s=300&d=mm&r=g) Instructor [See Full Bio](https://shingandojo.com/author/uda/) **Categories:** News & Insights --- ### [Happy New Year](https://shingandojo.com/happy-new-year/) **Published:** January 1, 2023 **Author:** Instructor **Content:** As we look back on the successes and accomplishments of 2022, we can reflect on how far we have come. As she put it: "Never thought I would see M do his forward roll on the football field. Looks like it came in handy." — Michelle What is Taihenjutsu? It's the critical art of saving yourself from falls, trips, and throws. Our foundational ground rolling and falling techniques give students skills that translate directly to real life—AND other sports. In our classes, students learn: - How to roll and fall safely - Techniques to recover gracefully from throws and take-downs - Body control that prevents injury when accidents happen Why This Matters Every child will experience falls, slips, and tumbles—at school, on the playground, or during sports. The difference between a minor stumble and a serious injury often comes down to one thing: knowing how to land properly. Taihenjutsu teaches that skill. And as this video shows, those lessons can pay off in unexpected ways, like a perfectly executed recovery during practice or a game. 🎥 Watch to the end—proof that what happens on the dojo mats stays with your child off it. Interested in building these foundational safety skills? Our Kids & Teens martial art programs incorporate Taihenjutsu fundamentals designed to protect, strengthen, and empower every student. 📩 Contact us to learn more! https://shingandojo.com/contact/ #football #martialartstraining #libertyhilltx #do78642 #do512](https://shingandojo.com/wp-content/plugins/instagram-feed/img/placeholder.png) ](https://www.instagram.com/reel/DeIU5VogDeW/) Load More [ Follow on Instagram ](https://www.instagram.com/shingandojo/) --- ![Two men learning martial arts](https://shingandojo.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Hanbo-Bill-and-Seth.jpg "Hanbo-Bill-and-Seth - Martial Arts Dojo in Liberty Hill, Texas")![](https://shingandojo.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/IMG_20211011_184649_251-1024x1024.jpg "- Martial Arts Dojo in Liberty Hill, Texas")![](https://shingandojo.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/IMG_20221012_174657-771x1024.jpg "IMG_20221012_174657 - Martial Arts Dojo in Liberty Hill, Texas")--- All photo and video content displayed throughout our website and social media is the exclusive property of Shin Gan Dojo and is protected by copyright. It emphasizes technique, body mechanics, leverage, and awareness to overcome an attacker regardless of size or strength. **Why focus on “Traditional Roots”?** We believe that the time tested effectiveness of the techniques and wisdom of historical Japanese martial arts provides the most effective foundation for movement and mindset. By studying these traditional roots, we gain a deeper understanding of balance, center, and efficiency. **What does “Modern Readiness” mean?** Modern Readiness is the practical application of our training to the challenges of the present day. It is a commitment to being prepared for any situation through five core pillars: - **Core Self-Defense Skills:** You will learn the essential techniques required for effective personal protection, adapted to each age group. - **Physical & Mental Fortitude:** Our training builds the physical resilience and disciplined mindset necessary to stay calm under pressure. - **Real-World Application:** We ensure traditional techniques are adapted to work effectively in modern, high-stress scenarios. - **Superior Balance & Control:** You will gain total body control and the ability to maintain your center while dominating a confrontation. - **Unshakeable Confidence:** By mastering proven skills, you cultivate a deep sense of self-assurance that carries over into every aspect of your life. --- Proudly serving our community of Liberty Hill, Texas and surrounding areas of Bertram, Burnet, Leander, Georgetown and Florence, TX. --- ### [Women’s Self-Defense in Liberty Hill: Empowering Your Natural Strength](https://shingandojo.com/classes/womens-self-defense/) **Published:** March 17, 2026 **Author:** Instructor **Content:** ### Traditional Roots. Modern Readiness. True self-defense isn’t about being the strongest person in the room; it’s about being the most prepared, mentally and physically. At **Shin Gan Dojo**, our Women’s Self-Defense program is designed to bridge the gap between traditional martial arts wisdom and the tactical realities of the modern world. Whether you are looking for individual instruction, a semi-private session with a friend, or a private group workshop, our training is tailored to your needs. --- ## Our Philosophy: Fighting Naturally and Fiercely We believe in training that acknowledges reality. It is a fact that men are generally larger and stronger; therefore, we don’t teach you to “fight like a man.” We move past the Hollywood depictions of effortless combat and focus on the distinct physical advantages women possess. - **Anatomical Advantage:** Our techniques prioritize the strength found in the hips and legs rather than upper-body muscle. - **Body Mechanics:** We utilize leverage, angles, and movement to maximize effect without relying on brute strength. - **Realistic Expectations:** While a workshop provides valuable tools, it is an introduction to a life-saving skill set. We emphasize the mindset needed to survive and escape. --- ## The Training Journey: From Theory to Application While our workshops follow a structured, time-tested curriculum, we believe self-defense is deeply personal. **Every session is intentionally tailored to address your specific questions and concerns.** Whether you have a particular scenario in mind or a specific safety worry, we prioritize time during class to ensure those needs are met. We utilize a proven three-stage progression to ensure you leave with “muscle memory,” not just ideas: 1. **Individual Practice:** You will first learn the mechanics of punching, kicking, blocking, and escaping wrist grabs in a controlled space. 2. **Impact Training:** We progress to applying these techniques against padded shields to help you find your power and target specific anatomical weak points on an attacker. 3. **Simulated Scenarios:** In the final stage, you will test your skills by stringing moves together against training partners and simulated attackers, including how to handle a fight that goes to the ground. --- ![Woman applying elbow joint lock and restraint against a man in Women's Self Defense class at Shin Gan Dojo in Liberty Hill TX](https://shingandojo.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/3-1-1024x576.jpg "3 - Martial Arts Dojo in Liberty Hill, Texas")Joint Locks Restraints![Woman demonstrating escape from being grabbed against a man in Women's Self Defense class at Shin Gan Dojo in Liberty Hill TX](https://shingandojo.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/4-1024x576.jpg "4 - Martial Arts Dojo in Liberty Hill, Texas")Escaping Grabs![Salt and Light Women's Network in Liberty Hill, TX group photo after taking a self defense class at Shin Gan Dojo](https://shingandojo.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/5-1024x576.jpg "5 - Martial Arts Dojo in Liberty Hill, Texas")Salt Light Womens Network--- ## Private Groups & Community Workshops We specialize in creating a comfortable, focused environment for organizations in the Liberty Hill and Greater Austin area. **We regularly host sessions for:** - Women’s Community & Church Groups - Girl Scouts & American Heritage Girls - Corporate Wellness & Workplace Safety - **Young Ladies (Ages 12-17):** We offer specialized curriculum specifically for teenagers and pre-teens. > **Stay Informed:** Community Group Classes are scheduled periodically. **[Subscribe to our monthly email updates](https://shingandojo.com/contact-us-2/)** to be the first to know about upcoming dates! --- ## Beyond the Workshop: Paths to Mastery A workshop is a powerful start, but the best way to ensure these skills stay with you is through ongoing training. ### Ongoing Martial Arts for [Adults](https://shingandojo.com/classes/adults-martial-arts/) and [Teens](https://shingandojo.com/classes/teen-martial-arts/) If you are looking for long-term confidence, we recommend our **Adult or Teen Martial Arts** class. His journey began around 1990, leading him to the disciplined world of Ninjutsu and the authentic Ninpo training at Yamato Dojo under his teacher and life mentor, Sensei Chadwick Minge, starting in 1991. Brian’s early years were marked by intense, immersive training, often one-on-one with Sensei Minge, honing his physical skills and deep understanding of **Taihenjutsu** (rolls and falls). This dedication earned him trusted status, becoming an Uke (Assistant) and mastering the crucial balance of committed attack and controlled technique. His commitment was formally recognized in 1994 when Sensei Minge awarded him Sho Dan, a rank personally affirmed by Tanemura Sensei, who honored him as an “American Samurai.” As his abilities matured, Sensei Brian embraced teaching, leading private and public classes for adults and children from 1995 onward. He discovered that teaching deepened his own understanding of Ninpo. In 2004, following his teacher’s footsteps, he opened his own martial arts school, Shin Gan Dojo, in Sparks, Nevada, which successfully operated for 15 years. In 2019, Sensei Brian and his wife Gigi moved to Panama, continuing to share their passion, opening a school in Boquete that operated for 1 year. In 2020 they returned to the United States, establishing their current training facility in Liberty Hill, Texas. They opened the doors as [Urban Defense Academy](https://urbandefenseacademy.com/) in Texas in February 2021, encompassing both armed self defense firearms training and traditional martial art. As the school has grown, it made sense to differentiate the firearms academy from the traditional martial arts. This discipline is structured into **separate, dedicated classes** for each weapon, allowing students to achieve mastery in the specific techniques and body mechanics required for each length. This program is dedicated to mastering this entire range of tools for defense, emphasizing disciplined movements, controlled power, and the historical techniques designed for genuine application in complex situations. **The Kukishin Ryū Curriculum** Kukishin Ryū teaches that true proficiency comes from understanding how to transition between tactical distances. Mastery in this program is achieved through the study of four distinct disciplines. **Students enroll in dedicated classes for each of the following weapons**, which are optimized for unique ranges of engagement: - **Rokushaku Bō (Six-Foot Staff):** - **Focus:** **Long-Range** defense. Utilizes the full length to control the engagement space, keeping opponents at a safe distance, and delivering powerful strikes (*uchi*) and thrusts (*tsuki*). - **Jō (Four to Five-Foot Staff):** - **Focus:** **Mid-Range** defense. A versatile tool for sweeping, deflecting, and controlling an opponent’s center line. It requires superior agility and control for fast, close-quarters transitions. - **Hanbō (Three-Foot Staff):** - **Focus:** **Close-Range** defense. Often used as an extension of the arm for joint locks, leverage, blocking, and rapid striking. It is effective in crowded or confined spaces. - **Tanbō (Short Stick/Baton):** - **Focus:** **Very Close Range** and concealed carry. Applied much like a baton for targeted strikes, pressure point manipulation, and weapon retention techniques. ![2 young women practicing bojutsu Japanese stick art](https://shingandojo.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Alyssa-Abby-Hanbo.jpeg "Screenshot - Martial Arts Dojo in Liberty Hill, Texas")![2 young women practicing bojutsu Japanese stick art](https://shingandojo.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Abby-blue-test-hanbo-768x1024.jpg "Abby blue test hanbo - Martial Arts Dojo in Liberty Hill, Texas")![2 young women martial artists with their female instructor](https://shingandojo.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/UDA20250125_132250-768x1024.jpg "UDA20250125_132250 - Martial Arts Dojo in Liberty Hill, Texas")--- **A Foundational Lineage of Excellence** The integrity and quality of any classical martial art are tied directly to its transmission. Our Bōjutsu curriculum follows a precise, unbroken line of transmission, ensuring students receive authentic and time-tested instruction. The principles and techniques of Kukishin Ryū are passed down through a respected martial lineage from Shoto Tanemura Sensei, to Sensei Chadwick Minge, to Sensei Brian Simmons, to Senpai Gigi Simmons. **Training Focus at Shin Gan Dojo** Kukishin Ryū Bōjutsu training builds physical strength, coordination, and mental focus. Because the diverse range of weapons requires precise control and full body engagement, it is an exceptional training method for improving foundational martial arts skills. This training is delivered with a clear emphasis on: 1. **Structure and Stability:** Learning to maintain correct posture and balance to harness the weapon’s momentum without losing control, regardless of the staff’s length. 2. **Waza (Techniques):** Dedicated practice of traditional forms (*kata*) to understand the combat sequence and underlying defensive applications for each weapon. 3. **Controlled Application:** Partnered drills that practice attacks and defenses in a safe, controlled environment, focusing on proper targeting and effective retraction. Students will gain not only proficiency with a traditional range of weapons but also superior body coordination that enhances all other forms of defensive training. **Integrating Kukishin Ryū with Modern Readiness** The Bōjutsu curriculum is a perfect complement to the defensive philosophy of the Shin Gan Dojo. Mastery of the stick arts fundamentally improves the student’s defensive psychology and insight by forcing them to think several steps ahead and manage the tactical space around them critically. The discipline and control developed here are essential foundational skills that translate directly into clear decision-making during high-stress situations. **Furthermore, the size and weight mechanics of the Jō and Hanbō translate directly to modern, everyday defensive tools, such as the walking cane, trekking pole, or hiking stick.** Students learn how to effectively employ these common items for self-protection using principles rooted in centuries of classical training. We welcome students seeking a serious, disciplined approach to traditional Japanese weaponry. **Enrollment and Scheduling** The Kukishin Ryū Bōjutsu Program is currently offered exclusively through **Private (1:1) Instruction for Adults only**. This specialized format allows for highly focused training tailored to your pace and goals. All instruction is scheduled by appointment and subject to our standard [private lesson rate](https://shingandojo.com/prices/).
