Meet Sensei Brian Simmons

Sensei Brian Simmons has dedicated over 30 years to the daily study of traditional martial arts, learning under his teacher and life mentor, Chadwick Minge. His profound journey began around 1990, when he sought direction and clarity, leading him to the disciplined world of Ninjutsu. He was fortunate to find the Yamato Dojo in North Hollywood, California, a genuine Ninpo dojo that was associated with the Genbukan at the time Brian joined in 1991. Please note: Shin Gan Dojo is an independent dojo and is not currently associated with the Genbukan or any other Japanese organization.

In his early years, Brian fully immersed himself in training, often working directly with Sensei Minge. This intense period not only honed his physical skills but also deepened his understanding of fundamental movements like rolls and falls (Taihen Jutsu). His dedication earned him Sensei Minge’s trust, leading him to become an Uke (Assistant) and learn the crucial balance of committed attack and controlled technique, even when practicing with a Katana.

Brian’s commitment was recognized in 1994 when he was awarded the rank of Sho Dan by Sensei Minge. He was further honored by Tanemura Sensei, who personally awarded him Sho Dan and called him an “American Samurai.” As his abilities grew, so did his responsibilities. He began teaching private and public classes for both adults and children, realizing that teaching was a powerful way to deepen his own understanding of Ninpo. From 1995 to 1999, he even shared Ninpo through his “Ninja Karate Party” business, which further enhanced his understanding of free-flowing movement and Randori.

In 2004, following in his teacher’s footsteps, Sensei Brian opened his own martial arts school, Shin Gan Dojo, in Sparks, Nevada. This dojo successfully operated for 15 years, from 2004 to 2019. Under Sensei Minge’s continuous guidance, Brian has achieved the rank of 4th Level Instructor’s License in Ninpo Tai Jutsu, which is inclusive of high black belt ranks in several other traditional Japanese martial arts styles.

In 2019, Sensei Brian and his wife Gigi moved to Boquete, Chiriqui, in the Republic of Panama, where they opened a dojo and continued to share their passion for martial arts.

They returned to the U.S. in 2020, settling in Liberty Hill, Texas. Here, they established a new training facility in February 2021. Sensei Brian continues to passionately share his deep knowledge and wisdom of traditional Japanese martial arts through Shin Gan Dojo. He truly believes martial arts is a lifelong pursuit, and he continues to learn and grow, sharing his gifts with the community.

We take training seriously, and we insist on having a good time too!
