What is Kenjutsu?

Kukishin-ryū Biken-jutsu (Kenjutsu) is a traditional Japanese martial art specializing in swordsmanship and battlefield combat, historically attributed to the Kuki family and formalized in the mid-14th century.  The system was established by Yakushimaru Ryushin (later Kuki Ryushin), who received the surname “Kuki” from Emperor Go-Daigo after aiding his escape during the Nanboku-chō period, with techniques evolving from naval boarding tactics and armored combat.

The curriculum is part of the broader Kukishinden Happō Biken-jutsu tradition, which integrates unarmed taijutsu, staff (bō), spear (yari), and halberd (naginata) techniques.  Key historical developments include the adaptation of weighted staffs for armored warfare by the 11th sōke, Okuni Kōgenta Yukihisa, during the Genna period.

The lineage was preserved through the Kuki family and later transmitted in the 20th century by Takamatsu Toshitsugu to Masaaki Hatsumi (Bujinkan) and Shoto Tanemura (Genbukan), who maintain distinct modern branches of the art.

You’ll be learning from a direct instructor lineage (Shoto TanemuraChadwick MingeBrian Simmons) that preserves these true historical techniques.
