Just as the name Shin Gan Dojo holds deep significance for us, so does our emblem. Every element was carefully chosen to reflect the values we strive to embody on and off the mat.
The Heart of the Emblem: Shin (真)
At the very center of our emblem is the Japanese kanji 真 (shin), which means “truth, reality, and genuine.” This is the cornerstone of our philosophy. This kanji reminds us to be truthful and authentic in all that we do. Our martial arts journey is about becoming a genuine version of ourselves, without pretense or deception.
The Balance of Fire and Water
Surrounding the kanji, you’ll find a triangle enclosed within a circle. This is an ancient symbol for fire (triangle) and water (circle), representing the balance of opposing forces. The three equal sides of the triangle symbolize the trinity of Mind, Body, and Spirit—each one crucial to a complete and balanced martial artist. The circle reminds us that our true power comes from stability and inner calm.
The Purity of the Lotus Flower
The next layer of our emblem is the lotus flower, a symbol of purity. Though it grows from mud and mire, its petals remain untouched and beautiful. The lotus teaches us that, like the flower, we must strive to keep our hearts and minds as pure as humanly possible, remaining independent of evil thoughts and influences, no matter our circumstances.
The Swords of the Dharma Wheel
Inside the lotus petals are the swords of the Dharma Wheel. The Dharma Wheel, a significant symbol in Japanese culture, represents universal law and order. The eight swords in our emblem symbolize our commitment to protecting this balance and order. The eight directions of the swords also reference Happo no Sabaki, the eight-directional movement that is a key principle in mastering our ancient art.
The Banner of Ninpo Bugei
Finally, the gold band that encircles the entire emblem signifies our connection to the Ninpo Bugei arts. This banner tells us that we are part of a rich and deep martial arts legacy, carrying on traditions of discipline and mastery that have been passed down for centuries.
Each part of our emblem is a reminder of the values we strive for—truthfulness, balance, purity, and a disciplined commitment to justice.
